G'day radiogandy.

RF linking is when the data that you have sent/received has left the twisted pair or fiber optic and uses the air waves (sometimes Satellite) at a very high frequency and wide bandwidth, which can handle a lot more traffic per second.

Its' draw back is, the more water vapour present between the two dishes (line of sight) the more the signal gets antenuated and slows things down.
