Wireless printer knocks off my internet connection

I have had a (very long) search on this and other forums for an answer, but as yet i still have the problem .......................... I have a strange problem with my new wireless Lexmark X4580 printer.
I bought the printer friday and have been trying since then to solve the following problem.
I can add the printer to my wireless network just fine (through a D-link G604T router). And it all works great, too.
The problem i have is that my internet doesn't work once the printer is installed.
I have tried to add it to the network through my XP desktop and Vista laptop and the same thing happens.
I am very technically minded, have tried alsorts of settings and each and every time I have to restart my router from scratch just to get the internet to work.
the printer is automatically given it's own ip address (usually its been 192.168.1.3) My router ip is: 192.168.1.1 (dlink G604T) netmask: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.1.1
It is as though the printer is somehow 'interfering' with the router or internet connection.
Help!
