Your best bet is to go into any store and ask for a demonstration of the laptops in your budget range, so that you can see how they perform, don't be afraid to ask either. Remember you're the one in control, as you're the paying customer; you can walk away at any time if they don't help you and don't feel pressured into getting something that you do not want.
Although you say £400 is not much to spend on a laptop, it's still a lot in terms of hard earned cash, so be wise with your purchase, get them to demo a game similar to the one that you want to play, so you can see how it (the laptop) performs.
Get them to play a DVD for you too, so that you can hear the sound quality of the speakers. Most tend to have average speakers, so you may want to look at adding external speakers at a later stage. Also get them to play the DVD using WMP (if that's your preferred media player) so that you can see if there is any lag from the laptops memory whilst it plays a movie.
Finally when settled with your purchase, make sure that you get from them; either a recovery disc or an original Windows disc, same goes for anything like MS Office, so that you can format the Laptop at a later stage (usually as soon as you get it home - to rid the amount of pre-loaded crap).
It's vital that you get either the recovery disc or original Windows disc. If they don't offer one, again walk away with your money.
