You mention two different things; in your description you say Windows Live (Windows Live Mail is the Hotmail replacement) and in the body of your question you say Windows Mail (Vista's successor to Outlook Express) which is why you confused Bungler.
To associate a file extension to a program in Vista, go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type, scroll down to .doc and select the program you want to use, e.g. Word.
If you don’t have Word, you can get the Word viewer here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en Also at the bottom of that screen are links to the viewers for Excel and PowerPoint, should you want them.
