Thank you all who commented. The computer is about two years old and has a mixture of USB 1 and 2. There does not appear to be a seperate USB 2 card fitted, hence my original question. Are you all saying that the only way to tell which is which is to swop the connections around.? Does this not upset the peripherals that are fitted into the other ports when you swop them about? This certainly happened when I swopped USB connections on my other computer and the printer especially had to be re-installed. My need is for an external Hard drive to connect to USB 2 for the speed during backups etc, and at the moment the machine tells me that it is plugged into a USB 1 port.
