best router is netgear to use with aol as aol provide technical support for setting up and any other problems you might have with your wireless connection
your 2nd question the answer is no you don,t have to load aol onto the laptop, he should be able to connect to the internet wirelessly by clicking on internet explorer icon, same applies if he has firefox or any other browser installed on his laptop
