Login screen doesn't appear

When I switch on, my laptop goes through the boot up procedure but stops before displaying the log in screen. This doesn't occur everytime, also sometimes after getting the log on screen the desktop icons don't appear. I have XP operating system. Can anyone suggest a solution. Many thanks
