My thanks to BurrWalnut for the reply to my enquiry.
1.These programs are there.
2.This did not work.
3.I do not think this is the case as nothing else seems to be affected. Anyway I did a laborious trawl through Microsoft Support and discovered, almost hidden at the end of another piece of help, that Microsoft know that this fault can affect Windows XP (amongst other operating systems). They suggest checking for the presence of a number of keys in the registry, but I have not had the time to go through them as yet.
