Nothing will install

Recently I have found that no software will install. I'm not sure how this happened but I have tried jumping back a month or two since before the problem began but this did not fix it. I tried downloading the installation program from Microsoft, this unpacked but did not fix the problem even after a reboot. Any ideas?
