Why would you need to copy the music back to the iPod?

You have the music on your PC in the My Music folder, you back that folder up onto an external drive.

You select what music you want to listen to on your iPod and you synch that with your iPod, you still have the music on your PC your external drive and your selection on your iPod, that's it.
