HD or Blueray recorders?

A fortnight ago, I bought a panasonic viera 23" tv.(freeview included) I'm more than pleased with the picture quality etc. As yet I haven't reconnected the vhs & video. I'm now wondering about one of those dvd with hard drive so that any recording/playing of dvd's can be done on that.
What I am thinking about, is taking it one stage further and having a HD dvd recorder. BUT, I've just learned that although hd dvd films are limited and slightly more expensive, there are TWO formats, HD OR Blueray and they aren't compatible. Both will show normal dvd's, but not opposing formats.
Like betamax and vhs, one had/has to go. Clearly betamax failed. So, who is more likely to succeed in this latest saga?.
I understand Sky and Virgin transmit in HD, Telly's are promoted as being HD, so one might be excused for thinking folk will be brainwashed into thinking HD when it comes to buying recorders, or am I wrong.
Either way, what comment do you have?
