AOL UPGRADE

Hello,
XP, BT external modem,AOL Silver Broadband.
Can anybody tell me how fast my broadband internet speed should be in general?
I am aware that it depends on the distance from the exchange and length of phone extension runs, etc. but AOL have recently upgraded stating that the internet speed should now be a lot better with a noticeable difference.
I am getting 486 kb/s download and 215 kb/s upload according to an online speed test I recently ran, is this good, average or bad as I don't notice any improved difference from pre AOL upgrade works.
A side note, I lost my internet connection on Saturday. I contacted them when it went off and they informed me that it would be back on in the morning but wasn't, three phone calls and 3 days later the AOL representative had to reset my modem for it to work saying that it was set wrongly and the setting was for a router and not the BT modem and this is why it didn't automatically come back on. This would be a good answer apart from I don't think this was true? anyway it was AOL who set my modem following a previous problem.
Any advice welcome.
