recording software?

Hi just wondering if anyone can give me some advice. My husband has been DJing for years and has very recently made the switch from vinyl records to using a CD mixer. To record his mixes on the PC so they can later be put onto CD he was using Magix. However, he was having problems with the recording levels, I think they were to low and he couldn't turn them up. On a friends advice he has also tried Nero and a couple of others which I don't think he got on to well with as computers are not his strong point. As a result I ended up with several programs on my computer, none of which he was happy with! After my persistent nagging that he was clogging up my computer with rubbish he and his friend removed everything they had put on, then installed ANOTHER lot of software, which as far as I can tell is taking up even more space than the stuff they removed! Can anyone advise me on the best type of program to use, either free or reasonably priced. I don't mind paying for the software as long as it will do the job! Would just like a happy husband and a de-cluttered PC!!! Thanks for any advice!
