ADSL activation problems

I am in the process of getting broadband for the first time.
My ISP (fast4.net) have told me that BT have rejected my ADSL order and gave the following message:
"ADSL CANCELLED REISSUE AS PROVIDE,Suppliers advised engineer has found an incompatible rented product on the line. End user needs to be contacted"
fast4 are telling me that I have to contact BT, and BT are telling me to get my ISP to contact their wholesalers.
The only services I am signed up for are: Caller Display Telephone Preference Service Ex-Directory
Does anyone know of any BT product/service which could cause this problem?
