Madeline, if you or your friend do go for FDM, may I advise to do the following as it's not set up as default in the program.
Once installed and launched click on the Options menu at the top of the window then click on download options and then the downloads tab, place a tick in the perform a virus check and then browse for your anti virus program, click apply then ok. Once the program downloads your AV will auto scan the file.
Using the new download tab, placing a tick in the save download to its groups appropriate folder, will give you the option to use the folder you mention above. So that you know where your downloads have gone, however I am sure you're used to this already with Fresh!
Also users of the FDM can leave feedback about a download and if the user has said that it is a virus, FDM will give you a warning before the download commences that a user has advised that there is a virus contained within the file you're about to download, however as always folk tend to either lie/wind, up or be very over cautious. You can scroll down to read all reviews, sometimes they're in other languages and then you can judge whether to go ahead or not.
I think there was a reviewer that said Google Earth was a virus, which was coming direct from the Google site, I chose to ignore that as did hundreds of others and downloaded it.
