DIAL UP CONNECTION SPEED

Good afternoon friends; I have developed a sudden problem with my DUN connection speed. Computer is Packard Bell Igo 6004, Operating System is Windows XP Home. Modem is a PCI Ambit AC'97, Have updated the driver from PB Site-noted that the driver issue is dated 2002! ISP is BT/TALK TALK and my distance from telephone exchange is less than one mile. Previously the connection speed was fairly constant at 46.6 Kbps. Without any warning the speed dropped to 45.2 Kbps. I have tried out one of those trial Internet Automatic Set-up Programmes called "tweak master". They give you 5 options which alters the MTU/TCP etc automaticaly, tried all 5 and no difference in connecting speed. What could be responsible for this sudden drop in connection speed? I have Nortons Anti Virus/Windows Defender/Adware/Spybot all up to-date and none have detected any spyware/viruses! Could it be that the BT/Talk Talk have adjusted the line levels downwards? I would be most grateful for any suggestions from the technically aware - Thank you in anticipation Znord737
