Finding and reconfiguring a sound card

Friends, This post is related to another posting further down the list to which I have had no replies, hopefully they can be linked when my PC admits that my sound card is indeed fitted!
I have been experiencing problems with my programming following a Windows update of the driver on my sound card.
Anyway, the system now tells me (Device Manager) that there is a problem with there not being a sound device fitted!
I have only uninstalled the programmes and their folders and then downloaded the original driver from Asus.
Any ideas as to how I get the sound card recognised again?

PS. System restore is unlikely to be of much use. Most entries deleted to clean up HD.
