coverting avi files problem

For some time now I have experienced difficulties when trying to convert avi files to dvd for burning to disc. I've tried a variety of software, including super dvd and nero, with mostly the same result. The conversion starts OK and then the software stalls and says it has encountered a problem and had to close. I've checked the source files using AVI medic, which tells me the file is OK, and it plays fine on the PC, so what is going wrong.
This is really starting to bug me now so any help would be much appreciated.
