Registry problem

Bit of a long story this but here goes...
I recently started having problems with itunes, it opened OK but wouldn't play any tracks. I decided to uninstall it and download the latest version in the hope it would sort the problem . When I clicked remove in add/remove programs the Installshield wizard started momentarily but then shut down. Quicktime would also not uninstall. I thought I'd try to download the latest iTunes version in the hope that might fix things but towards the end of the install process got the following error message.
iTunes + Quicktime Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer,Inc\Quicktime\ActiveX. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel
So that lead me to believe I have a problem in the registry. I opened regedit and looked in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer,Inc\Quicktime
sure enough there are errors opening various Quicktime related keys e.g.
Error! Cannot open Installed plug-ins, ActiveX, Installed file types, Installed files etc etc etc
It looks like the Quicktime folder in my registry is totally messed up.
Would appreciate any help on this and Apologies if I've posted in the wrong part of the forum, I know it's iTunes/Quicktime related but the problem to me seems to be with the registry.
I'd very much appreciate any help!
