Epson C62 Nearing It's End?

Pal of mine has a 2 year old Epson C62 printer, after putting it to good use it now reports:
"Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. Contact your dealer for replacement."
He's asked me if there's a work around this problem to save money. After advising the obvious, dump it and buy a new one, price should not spoil his Christmas plans, I went searching. A number of forum answers focused on the SSC Service Utilityfor Epson Stylus Printers. a freeware program which might extend his printer's life.
Can anyone here vouch for it's reliability or possibly suggest an alternative method please?
