Just to clarify if your not sure why your 512 is suddenly 504, your graphics card is sharing your RAM allocation and for future reference is not preferred. Look for a system or rather a graphics card that has its own memory.
Logically twice the memory can only help your system. As above, multi tasking should be better.
Your 1024MB will only be 1016MB with the shared memory though.
