Sony Vaio RAM

Hey,

I have a sony vaio FS285E and plan on upgrading the RAM from 512MB to 1GB. I have two questions:

1) Will it noticeably improve general computer speed?
2) Can I remove both sticks of RAM and just put in 1GB in one slot, or do I have to buy two sticks of 512MB?
