It is indeed red now, and not at all easy on the eye.
I would suggest you investigate use of colour on screen (there are plenty of sites on Google that offer information). Red on blue does not work. Yellow on blue (assuming you're attached to the blue background) might be a better option.
If you need inspiration just look at magazine pages and see what colour combinations are used there and try the out online.
