Help (confidence?) needed to wipe (reformat) hard disc

I have acquired worms due to inadequacies of NIS. They are supposed to have been removed but I am sure they are still lurking due to certain unexpected behaviours. In particular, I am aware that there are entries in "Start up" which I delete but re-generate themselves.
The general consensus from my more knowledgeable computer friends and helplines seems to be that, to be sure I have a clean system, I should wipe the hard disc and re-load everything including Windows XP professional.
I have backed up all data files to CD. I have printed a hard copy of everything in device manager and know what my graphics card is. I have created a start up diskette. As far as I am aware I have all the CDs required for all devices installed and all programmes needed.
I have three questions: 1. Can anyone recommend a site which gives step by step instructions as to how to proceed (or tell me how to proceed)?
2. When the hard drive is reformatted, how does the keyboard work so that I can use this to proceed with installing windows and other software? I have a Logitech Wireless keyboard and mouse so i'm unclear how this will work if I wipe the hard disc.
3. At what stage and in what order should I download the updates for Windows XP and Norton Internet Security? I have BT Broadband and am concerned that my machine will be compromised while I am downloading updates for both, so what would be the best order to do things in?
