Scanner/PC Freezing

Just bought a scanner last week (Epson 3490 Photo) and I'm having trouble getting it to work. I followed the install instructions to the letter i.e. Install software/drivers 1st, connect to PC, plug into mains. Everything goes well until I plug it into the mains, then my PC freezes and I have to switch it off at the mains before I can reboot it, after which, it works as normall until I follow step 3 again.
I already have an Epson C40 printer installed, could it be a software/driver conflict??
Any ideas
