hi all..a quick question, if I was to re-install windows 98 would this replace DLL files again, i seem to have lost loads and it is preventing me from opening programmes etc.. Thanks mo clayton - warrington - Sat Feb 09 13:56 2002 reply
Mo, First try a System File Check Go to Start Run and type in SFC. If that fails to solve the problem and you know which Dlls you are missing,(and there aren't too many of them!), go to http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html and type in the name of the missing DLL, save them to your Windows\System file. If there are a lot, then yes you would be better off re-installing. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Feb 09 16:29 2002 reply
Hi Iain, I cant run SFC:(SFC caused a stack fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff724c1.), I seem to be getting an illegal operation error message every time I try and do something and the missing DLL files seem to mounting up, barr noting them all down, re-installing seems my best bet. Thanks for your invaluable advice..again :) mo clayton - warrington - Sat Feb 09 23:34 2002 reply

I am having problems with my PC freezing and not resonding to C,A,D. Last night I scandisked and defragged OK ...something I do once a week. When I shut down the PC, although it said it was shutting down it did not and I was forced to switch off manually. This am I was in an internet site, clicked on a link and once again it froze and I had to resort to switching off again. This is so irritating. I have a Dell Dimension 2 yrs old. I run Windows 98SE,I.E. is version 5...never upgraded on the principle if it ain't broke why fix it. I have 2 hard drives...one used entirely for music is 40 GB...not much on it and the other 9 GB about half full. I have 256 RAM. I have NAV and also Zonealarm free version. Iain, can you or anyone else out there help me to resolve this problem. I am not technically very skilled so would appreciate very clear instructions. Waiting in hope. A friend has bought a USB scanner for his PC - but doesn't have USB ports! Can you buy an adaptor of some kind to allow connection? He approached a local PC shop who says he needs a card. Allan McPhail - Cumbernauld - Fri Feb 08 21:18 2002 reply
You can get USB to PS2 adapters, but to honest I have only ever used them for rodents! You can buy a USB PCI card for about £15 from most independant computer hardware shops. They are very easy to install. You may need to change the Settngs in BIOS (depending on the age of the computer) and the computer must be running minimum of WIN95B for the operating system to recognise it. Hi Gang, I have to admit I feel a bit embarrassed about this one, and my aplogies to Iain who's already given me so much help on this subject recently. Windows 95 and Winzip. Ages ago I downloaded a screensaver from the net (a waterfall, so I'm guessing it moves, but I could be wrong!) onto a floppy, but it's only very recently I got around to downloading Winzip and I'd forgotten all about it. I've tried all the advice given by Iain for previous winzip perplexions but I can't make this one work at all. I guess it's something basic I'm doing wrong but your help would be appreciated. Please accept my thanks in advance and to Iain my apologies again if I'm geting on your wires a bit with this one. Regards, Steve. Ps. Iain, the other stuff is fine, Cheers!. Hi Iain, Thanks for your help but I've just about given up on this one!. It's not important but it was the very first thing I downloaded,.... EVER!, and it would have been cool to see it. I keep getting a message that says something along the lines of I/O error cannot read file. so I guess I'm still doing doing something wrong with it, but not to worry, the sun will still come up in the morning, 'appen!. Thanks for all your help anyway and the really important stuff you helped me with a couple of days ago is working grand so I'm quite happy. Regards, Steve. Steve - Leeds - Sat Feb 09 15:47 2002 reply

Open Windows Explorer, click on your A: Drive RIGHT Click on the file that you wish to extract and click on "Extract to" Click "I agree", An applet will pop up. In the Right hand(Folders/Drives) Choose which drive you want to save it to, and which folder by clicking on it. Now click new folder in the bottom right and give the folder a name. Remember the file name and location Then click "Extract" Now go to the new file which you have just created. Inside the folder that you have just created should be your set up file. Good Luck Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Feb 07 13:14 2002 reply
Hi Iain, thanks for all your help so far, I reckon I'm probably about half way there but need further advice. I think it has all gone across to the folder ok but I still cant work out how to see it!. I get a large window opening that says zip files, in the top left corner on a blue background, and in this window are 30 pictures of a 'page turnng' with (presumably) the file names written beneath each one. I can't find out how to see what's inside all these pictures. When I click on any of them it keeps taking me back to various winzip dialogue boxes and it doesn't seem to help no what I do!. I did see at one point something that said XLS but it doesn't always appear, Does this mean everything is actually needing Excel which I don't have anyway?. Any further suggestions will be appreciated. I'm not a 'silver surfer' yet, and at this rate I wont get to be one, as I'll be bald long before that time arrives!. My thanks to again, Regards, Steve. Steve, You don't need Excel to view xls files, you can get a FREE viewer from http://office.microsoft.com/ downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx (3.813Mb) you can't edit the file but you can view/print it. If you right click on any of the other icons and click properties you will be able to find out what type of file they are. I would imagine you should be looking for a Setup.exe file to install the program that you have downloaded/brought home from work ;) PS here's a comb|_|_|_|!!! HI Iain, My sincere thanks. I've downloaded the viewer you suggested and it works fine. You've massaged a very aching head, - and now that I've also got a brand new comb I even look rather dashing too!. Thanks again Bud, you're a top man. Regards, Steve. Steve - Leeds - Fri Feb 08 00:00 2002 reply
Hi! A little advise would be appreciated by a novice. Can a CD-R Disc cause the laser tracking to deviate on a standard audio CD player. I ask because shortly after I tried playing a CD-R disc on my audio the player went on the fritz!. Coincidence or what?. If it was coincidence then I will have to get a new Hi-Fi. I guess what I really want to know is,can a ordinary audio CD player play recorded CD-R's like normal pre-recorded CD's without damaging it assuming the correct steps have been taken during the copying of the CD-R. Thank for any input. Keith Taylor - Oldham - Wed Feb 06 19:03 2002 reply
As long as the CDR disk that you are trying to use, has been recored as an AUDIO CD, then it will play quite happily on most modern standard audio cd players. However, if you try to use a normal CD, that is specific to computer based cdrom drives, in a standard audio player, then yes, you can damage the hi fi, and it isnt just the lazer, actually, its more likely to be the amplifiers that are taken down, for the lazers are generally standard. So, make sure that the CDR disk that you put in your HI FI is an AUDIO disk. Hope this helps. Future - Wed Feb 06 21:43 2002 reply
Thanks for reply. If by "specific to computer based cdrom drives" you mean programme discs for eg. Encarta then yes I may be a novice but I ain't braindead. At least now I can sleep peacefully knowing I have not done anything wrong it was just a dodgy Hi-Fi drive. Thanks again. Keith - Oldham - Thu Feb 07 09:18 2002 reply
Hi everyone, You guys helped me before when I had a problem with Paint Shop Pro. Now I have a different problem. Everytime I switch on my computer I get the message 'Please wait while setup updates your configuration files. This may take a few minutes. Completed update of configuration files.' Whilst I expect this message if I add or remove any software, I haven't done so for some time. Just for info, I recently installed Norton Systemworks 5.0 which loads on startup. Could this be causing the message? Jane Anglin - London - Wed Feb 06 16:31 2002 reply
You might want to stop Norton from starting when you start up to see if this will solve the problem. Go to Start | Run, type in "msconfig", click the Start up tab , and check the all the Norton items in the list. Restart your computer twice. If it is still occurring after the SECOND time, you can probably assume that it is not Norton that is causing the problem Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Feb 06 19:01 2002 reply

Can anyone advise or help. When running scandisk (standard test)it runs with no problem, checking files & folders & repairing any errors when prompted. When running scandisk (thorough test & automatically fix errors checked)it totally freeze's when cluster 3633 of 2813010 is reached,& the hard disc makes laubouring sounds. Can anyone help with this problem.I have to turn the machine off at the mains and restart. Steve. S - Darlington - Mon Feb 04 08:37 2002 reply
Norton Disk Doctor, if you have it. may repair the error, so that you can get your data backed up. Once the error is corrected, then run NDD for at least 10 days doing a surface scan each time. If any more such errors are encountered, then, has Iain said, you will need a new hdd. Future - Mon Feb 04 13:19 2002 reply
Sounds suspiciously like a bad cluster that can't be fixed. Try running the scan disk without the automatically fix errors. If it stops in the same place, you may find that the HDD is shot!! Get yourself prepared. When 1 or more clusters go like that, a few more are sure to follow. How old is the hard drive? If it is more than 3 years old, I would certainly be thinking about replacing the hard drive before it gets to the stage where data can't be backed up or retrieved Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 04 12:35 2002 reply
On reading web user magazine issue 23 on the hints & Tips someone gave a hint on how to increase your surfing speed on the internet by changing the size of your swap file. As he explains you goto the Virtual Memory and specify your own virtual settings, now he used the calculation..Set minimum and maximum values to 2.5 times your total memory size????. Now i don't know if he meant 2.5 times less because it will not allow you to go over your max memory limit. My computer max is set at 25540MB and the min is at 0MB. Can anyone explain this and what the Virtual Memory is used for. Stuarty - Airdrie - Mon Feb 04 00:35 2002 reply
The memory size referred to is that of RAM, therefore if you have 128Mb RAM, you want to set your virtual memory to 320Mb. Basically what it amounts to is an extension of your RAM. The operating system copies as much information as possible into main memory, and leaves the rest on the hard disk drive (HDD). When the operating system needs information from the HDD, it exchanges a portion of that information in main memory with a part of the information on the HDD, This is known as SWAPping. You have definitely got too much set up there. It will take forever to access the data left on the hard drive addresses Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 04 06:52 2002 reply
I would say it was HD size that was meant. Virtual memory is hard drive space that windows uses as memory to store files that are mostly used, and it keeps them open, so that when it needs them, it doesnt have to open them first. It doesnt just increase the net access, it increases the overall performance of the puter, and so the larger the hd capacity the better, and of course the more main memory (RAM) you have the better too. Setting your own virtual memory is ok, but if having it set at auto is working, thenleave it, but you can experiemtn. Virtual memory has been used by windows since Windows 2, or as it was called DOS Extensions, it is one swap file, and the reason it is called a swap file, is because it swaps files with the rest of your drive, whenthey are not in use. The name of the swap file is called....WIN386.SWP .You cannot delete it from windows, but usualy it is deleted once windows has been shut down. A new one is created each time windows starts...hope this helps. Future - Mon Feb 04 02:16 2002 reply
Thanks to you both for your information. Going back to iains comment when you said that i have far too much??? do you mean software running or data files. If so could any of you recomend a good setting to run the virtual memory at. My current settings are set by windows but the others are set at the following c:\25469mb FREE and the min = 0 and the max = 25469. There is an message that says that if there is not enough then i will not be able to restart my pc. thanks again stuarty - Airdrie - Mon Feb 04 19:58 2002 reply
Stuarty, basically times your RAM by 2.5 so if you have 64mb you want the virtual memory to be 160mb; 128Mb 320; 256Mb 640; 512Mb 1280; (and if you're mad enough ;)768Mb 1920) Leave the minimum at 0. Restart your computer and see the difference. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 04 20:26 2002 reply
PS that message regarding c:\25... is to tell you how much you have to play with. So you have plenty to extend your VM Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Feb 04 20:30 2002 reply

Also I tried to re-load Word 2000 again and the error message I get is "can't find C:\CABS\W2K DATA1". Am I right in thinking that without this I can't update software? Sue, it maybe that your Word2000 cd as become damaged in someway, and your cdrom may not be able to read the file, that is why you could be getting the file not found error, yes this error can occure if the cd is damaged, usually the cd wont be read, but there are occasions when it can read most of it, just not the corrupted file. Clean your Word 2000 cd, with a cloth that is used for cleaning glass. Do not use anything abrasive, ie T.Shirt, which I have seen many do. Packet writing software such as Direct CD, and as long as it supports your cdr/w it will allow you to use your cdr/w as is if were a Floppy Drive. Future - Fri Feb 01 22:56 2002 reply
I haven't got a disc for it as it was pre-installed in the machine when I bought it in December 2001. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Sat Feb 02 02:03 2002 reply
Why hasn't PC World gone out of business!!! What a load of poppycock (that is the politest I can say, because I don't want to get banned from the boards!!) I have NEVER heard such utter rubbish. There are hundreds of sites out there about the subject, but this is just one http://www.mediastore.com/cdr/cdr_faqs.asp. Does the computer give you the option to Browse for the file. If so, click the browse button, and search for it in your cd drive. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 01 20:33 2002 reply
I quite agree - these people are supposed to help. I know it's rubbish because I have one on my Windows 98 machine. On the subject of Word 2000, It does give me the option to browse but I can't find the C:|CABS\W2K anywhere on my system at all. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Fri Feb 01 21:04 2002 reply
Sue you won't find it on c:\ drive, however put your cd in and get it to look for DATA1 Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 01 21:44 2002 reply
I haven't got a CD as it was pre-installed in my machine when I bought it with no backup discs. I tried re-installing Works 2000 from the disc but that came up with the same message. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Sat Feb 02 02:07 2002
