Can anyone tell me just exactly what is a kernel32.dll error? I keep getting these when viewing webcam pages & it then says IE will shut down! This is getting to be a real nuisance! How do I prevent them from happening?

Defrag problem. My PC will not perform a defrag so I tried downloading Power Defrag and set it running overnight. 12 hours later I was still 0% complete. Any ideas what is wrong please and what I can do to rectify the problem. Thanks.

Are you sure that you downloaded "AVG", the free anti-virus programme from www.grisoft.com? I've never had to close down any programmes or turn off the screensaver - AVG does that for me - which lets AVG use all available memory.

Richard, you have to shut down all programs except Systray and Explorer. Use Ctrl+Alt and press Delete to remove each of them. Also stop any screen saver that you have running.

Any digital camera enthusiasts on board please? Have received photos for first time but quality on printing out is not as good as monitor. Have made a couple of attempts to improve but can't get close enough to match. My system is Windows xp home if that means anything to you for this purpose. Thank you for any help forthcoming.

You will get better, clearer pictures if special glossy paper designed for photographs is used. Printing on ordinary photo-copier/laser paper gives a slight bleeding and blending of the various colours, making for rather poor pictures.

I am not a digital camera enthusiast, but I can tell you that the quality of the print is determined by a number of factors. Firstly, the no. of pixels in the original picture. So, a camera that takes pics that are 640 x 480 pixels will take a photo that is significantly poorer in quality than a camera that can take pics of, say, 2832 x 2128 pixels. It's a bit like taking a picture with a normal photo negative camera, with say a 1600 iso film in it. If you were to then enlarge said photo to 7x5" it would look ok, however, when enlarged to 11x8 you would almost be able to count the "dots" making up the picture. Cameras available at the moment, even those with a 5+megapixel capability are unlikely to produce results that could match a photo negative photograph. Basically, the technology is slow in catching up with photo negative standards. Secondly, if your printer is only capable of say, 1200x1200 pixels reproduction, then that also will reduce the quality of your final result. A 1200x2400 would obviously be better, but the sooner the manufacturers produce something that can match the quality of a photo-negative camera print, at a reasonable price, then the sooner we will all be happier! As a teenager, I had a "life-size" poster of Raquel Welch on my wall that was about 6 foot x 4 foot. The dots making up the picture were SOOOO big you could practically count them! What I am saying, is that we are all asking the current technology to do things that it isn't quite capable of, at the moment. So, remortgage your house & buy a "professional" quality camera & printer & you will still be left wanting! The answer is to enjoy what you can afford & wait until the technology catches up with the demands of the photographer! I hope this helps!

Wow! that's some answer Eddie was not prepared for it.many thanks. For the record my printer is an Epson C20 series (it says so on the quick guide),it's brand new, the PC is brand new and I'm a brand new user. However I'm much too old to take out another mortgage so will stay with what I have.I don't know what quality camera took the pics only that they were the first I have received. Do you still have that Racquel Welch picture? I'm more from the Jane Russell era, never had a pic though. Many thanks.

Hello again! Providing you are happy with small(ish) prints, you should be able to get ok ones with what you've got, but at 720x720 dpi, the resolution will NOT be brilliant. What you have is an ok, all-round BASIC printer. What you need is a photo quality printer. Try Epsons's website & click printers. You will see yours as a basic printer. Click photo quality printers & you will see the difference in spec & cost! Shops like PC Worls often have sales, so pop into your local one & see if they can offer you a better printer. Good luck, hope this helps! Glad to be of service. Just wish someone would answer my query now, further down the page!

Hi All, I was wondering if someone could help me, well not myself but my daughter Samantha. To let you understand she asked me how to fix her problem with her Laptop she had but not knowing how to fix it I directed her to post her problem on this forum as I have had excellent feedback in solving some of my own problems. So in fact the problem with the CD rom drive originated from her and I decided to post it as well and I was surprised to see that there was no reply to any of them. Could this be one problem that no one knows about? Some how I have a sneaky feeling that someone will come across. My apologies for the confusion. Thanks

HELP! A while back I lost ALL my collection of mpegs which I had saved on a cd in my cd re-writer drive. One day they were there, the next, all gone. I was baffled as to how it could have happened as I hadn't done anything to cause this to happen. Then I was reading that there are worm viruses about that can delete ALL files with a particular suffix, eg, ******.jpg, or *****.mpg etc. So, using my elementary powers of deduction, Doctor Watson, I deduced that perhaps I might have a worm that had caused this. Unfortunately for me, I am something of a "newbie" as far as pc's go, so I have absolutely no idea what to do to sort it out. I have done a full virus scan with Norton & nothing was found. Now I read that Windows Me, my operating system, can store virus files where they will not be detected, so I tried to fix this by disabling system restore before doing the virus scan & STILL nothing was found! I am going insane, somebody please help me & please don't get too technical cos I will only have to post more questions asking for explanations to the "techie" terms! ARGH!

Hi Gang, Been away for a couple of days and returned to find all the bits and pieces gone from my 'tool bar'?, the bit at he top of the screen where used to be displayed things like back/forward buttons and refresh/stop etc. I've found them behind a button on the top right of the screen with a couple of small chevrons on it and they will drop down and work ok but I can't get them back where they were before which is a bit of a bind. The customise button isn't helping me to achieve it(maybe I'm using wrongly!) Any help greatly appreciated and as ever, please acept my thanks in advance. Regards, Steve.

Thanks Iain, we're halfway there. Now I've got all the 'bits and pieces' back at the top of my page and working ok, I find that I've lost the 'task bar and systems tray?' at the bottom of it and I've also lost the address bar at the top! Any suggestions?, And my thanks to you as always. Regards, Steve. Oops hang on, when I place the curser arrow over the bottom of the page I can get the stuff up but as soon as I click somewhere else on the page it disappears back out of sight. Over to you again I'm afraid, sorry!...

But for now, I'm going off to play,.... I may be sometime!. But please don't leave this place, we all need you. Thanks again for everything, no reply needed, Regards, Steve.

I undertook a search to try to find it but now every time I use the PC I receive a message every ten minutes or so saying the PC is unable to locate the file. I have tried ctrl-alt-del but it does not appear to be listed as a programme/function that is running. What have I done wrong, please help.

Richard, Assuming it is a program file and you didn't specify any different location try this. Open windows explorer, click program files on left column then click on modified on the right column. It will give you the dates in order of download/installation.Do the same things for a document file but right column click my documents.Click on the program. What did you search for?You did use the advanced search on the internet?Try opening the search again and see if it still running.

phil - scarborough - Sun May 26 16:57 2002

Eddie, Firstly at the top of the tool bars select TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then click on CLEAR HISTORY. this will delete any previous URL's that you have entered. Secondly goto http://www.annoyances.org and click on search at the top right and enter TWEAKUI in the search, then on the searches click on DOWNLOAD TWEAKUI and install. Thirdly select START then RUN end enter REGEDIT, now open the following HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs and on the right select the URL's ( URL1, URL2 etc ) and delete them all. Hope this is clear enough. So you have 3 options to choose from.

You'll need a Windows boot floppy to boot the PC and use Format command to format to Windows format. This will wipe out your OS/2 install forever so backup all your data first.

the reason why people have trouble unistalling z/a is because they don't tick "do not load z/a at startup "and then you must restart your computer before you unistall, this is the only way to stop the true vector running, best place to go for infor is the zonelabs site.

I am running windows ME. I have two problems that I hope you can help me with - 1) When I try to run the scandisk, it keeps freezing and when I try ctrl/alt/del end task does not respond and I have to restart the pc. I am running zonealarm 2.6 could this be causing probs? 2) I recently installed broadband internet with a 128 connection from ntl. When I try to update pc-cillin virus program it comes up - internet connection failed, however the internet connection appears fine. I did have to do a full system restore a week ago for an error on the c drive (as advised by Tiny Tech Support!) I would be grateful for any advice you guys might have.
