can any one please give advice about a problem I am having with my computer. When I boot up the screen freezes. When I press alt.ctrl, delete the message says that a programme is not responding. It is a different prog.every time sometimes incredeimail or sctray or avgcc32.I have to press the reset button and boot up sometimes as much as three times before I finally succeed.I then have no more problems for approx 3-4 days then it happens again.I do not have a lot of experience with computers and would be grateful for any advice.Thank you in advance.Bill

Bill, you don't say which operating system you have. This may be caused by a memory leak,
Memory leaks aren't always easy to spot, but if you could do worse than to use Fred Langa's 5 Steps to identifying and reducing memory leakage.

The page linked to is Part 4 of a four part article on Resource leaks and the whole is well worth reading, especially part 3

I am running windows 98 se. On start up my PC always seems to think that it has not been closed down properly last time(which it has) and checks all my files etc. Then it tells me that there has been a problem with the registry check and offers to fix this. It also puts my display settings to the wrong configuration and I have to re set. Any ideas?

Iain that one has me stumped. I have been following a few of your other posts and downloaded belarc but I am not sure what i am looking for. I have a 1.1 AMD Athlon(tm) processor with a micro star circuit board MS-6378(VT8361)- does this mean anything ?
Steve - Edinburgh - Tue Oct 15 20:47 2002
reply

Steve, you already answered the question, you have a MS-6378 motherboard (or mobo), so you are looking for 2 x 100/133MHz 3.3V 168-pin unbuffered DIMM.
Seeing as 133Mhz Sdram is cheaper than 100Mhz, we are looking at either a second 128Mb stick or either a 256Mb or 512Mb Stick.

Komplett has a range to choose from.
Crucial and Kingston are branded RAM, but as you can see, they tend to be more expensive. Of the two, I would go for Kingston, (personally I go for generic RAM). Don't be afraid to contact your supplier.
999/1000, they will be more than happy to help and are very experienced.

According to a freind of mine, it is possible to have a dual monitor setup by simply haveing two graphics cards, as windows apparently detects this and asks you how you want the display set up. Is this true, or would I just have to invest in a dual-display card, and if so, what's the cheapest one I can get?!?! Thanks, Alex

You can do both if you wish, this page deals with what hardware is supported in Windows 98, (but can easily be done for all operating Systems), whilst this page explains how to set multiple monitors up

I would imagine that you have a either a faulty driver for your video card, or the actual video card itself is faulty. I'll be honest, it is more likely to be the latter, especially if this problem has just suddenly started.
However, start by re-installing the drivers. If that fails, then I'm afraid it may be time to start saving for a new graphics card

One question for you, Manisha. Have you installed XP Service Pack 1?
If not, do so, by going to Windows Update

or you could try doing the System restore in Safe Mode. Restart your computer and press the F8 key as the computer reboots. Say No so that the System Restore menu comes up and restore from there

You could also try using the Command Prompt, in which case you need to read M$KB 304449">

If all this fails, you might want to read M$KB 302796

Hi, Can anyone shed any light on this, please? I am haveing a spot of bother with Internet Explorer 6 suddenly hanging and requiring me to re-boot the machine, so I ran Norton System Doctor to see if it would offer any help. It said, amongst other things that I have 321 (three hundred and twenty one!) open files, yet CTRL+ALT+DEL says that there are only16 running files. What are these other 305 files? Do I need them all and how can I unload them if I don't need them. I am running Windows ME and have 128MB RAM and another progam that I have says that all but 8% of this is in use. HELP! Chris

iain, just to pose a question, why be wary of what norton tells?as for the price we pay for the software,is the information it gives us unreliable??? (running system works)
allan - rushden - Fri Oct 11 20:33 2002
reply

From personal experience, I have found that Norton System works gives what are known as false negatives. This is where it reports what it believes to be an error, when in fact it is a normal process occurring in the background.
Unless you have Win2000 or XP, Your task manager on shows a part of what is going on and none of the processes running in the background that keep your PC running efficiently, and Norton has had a tendency to report these processes as errors.

A lot of these files that are running are device drivers, mouse, keyboard, your Antivirus and firewall etc.

All I am suggesting is that you don't take everything as read

You don't actually nned to download anything, there is already one on your computer
Go to Start| Run
Type in Charmap
This will bring up the Character Map
In the Font Window, change the Font to Marlett
Click on the tick there once to highlight it
Click Select, then Copy

Now, in your excel spreadsheet, highlight the cell where the tick is to go and click Format
Click Cells
On the Fonts tab, change the font to Marlett
Click OK
Now right click the cell and click Paste

Just right click and copy the cell and right click and paste to repeat that in a number of cells

You have two options. 1)On your keyboard press Control + Alt + Delete. This will bring up a window with running programs. You need to in turn close all programs (except Explorer and Systray) select and press end task. Once you have only these two programs running, use disc defrag or scandisc. 2)Run your PC in safe mode and then use scandisc or defrag.

This may be an easy one, but I have read about storing music on my pc if I run XP as my OS. Is this true, and if so, how does it work ? Also, if they are stored, are they stored as an mp3 file ? Therefore, does it mean that if you run XP as your OS, your have the facility to convert and make mp3 music from cds?
James - Hemel Hempstead - Tue Oct 08 11:41 2002
reply

James,
You heard right, but it is not just Xp that can do it, ALL versions of Windows that can install Windows Media Player 7 and above have that capability (ie Windows 98 on). Window Media Player "rips" audio tracks to the hard drive as .wma files. If you have XP and you open Windows Media Player 8 on XP, on the left, you will see a tab that says Copy CD
Most people convert WMA to MP3 or rip directly to MP3, because it is the most commonly used format in file sharing applications. The reason for this is that MP3 tend use substantially less space than a WAV or WMA file. However, the compactness of MP3 does have it's drawback in that there is a small loss in quality

You can purchase an addon to Windows media Player that allows you to create MP3 out of wma files, but most people use a third party application such as dbPowerAmp (1.5Mb Freeware) which can rip cds directly to MP3, or with the WMA Codec addon (2.2Mb) can convert WMA to MP3
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 08 12:41 2002
reply

I am being a bit picky here about the above spot on advice. As far as I am aware wma's are smaller than MP3's.Wav's 10x an MP3 .wma's smaller still? I don't like spending money but I have bought a copy of audio converter (do a google search) cost about £13 will convert audio every which way but loose. It is great for all your audio file needs
john-boi - sheffield - Tue Oct 08 22:21 2002

Must be my media player then but it's about 20% bigger, depends on the bitrate per second one "records" the MP3s at!!
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 08 22:39 2002
reply

Please forgive me if I am wrong, you have been very helpful to everybody in the forum. a recent survey published in the web-user showed that a man on the street can not easily distinguish between .wma & .mp3 files on listening. When I checked the size in comparable bit rate, it was exacly same for both the formats( I am using Beta version of Media player 9.0 {free to download}) Only reason to convert to MP3 format for me is to listen on DVD player.
Shubham - Enniskillen - Mon Oct 14 14:17 2002
reply

Feel free to contradict me
SomeMP3 converters allow you to choose which bit rate you convert to and in fact, WMP also allows you to choose the Music copying Quality settings in Tools | Options | Cd Audio
I'll be honest, I don't use wma for the same reason as you, and on the portable MP3 player.
Quality is hardly an issue when you are deaf in one ear as I am!
The other factor for me was that the vast majority of file sharers use MP3 (not that I share music files of course, because it is unlawful!)

Hi, I am currently running Windows 2000/Windows 98 or a partitioned hard drive. Recently when the computer is loading either one, it takes a long time to load, sometimes 5 minutes. When I managed to look at what the computer was doing, it always stopped at a file called Mup.sys (WINNT/System32/Drivers/Mup.sys). What is this file and why is it taking so long to sort itself out? What can I do about it? Thanks
Bill - Mon Oct 07 22:52 2002
reply

Mup is Multiple Uniform Naming Convention Provider, and you REALLY don't know what it does. You do? Rather you than me, but read all about it here I am not really sure it is the problem.
What I am sure about is that Win 2000 loads a LOAD of background services!! Want to see what I mean? Do a CTRL ALT DEL to bring up the Task Manager and click Processes. Now visit this site to find out what doesn't need to be there! I would suggest that you disable all the unecessary services

Now just a couple of things left to do. You may have noticed that Windows 2000 wasn't provided with MSconfig, an oversight remedied in XP. However, thanks to the talents of someone out there in cyberland, you can have your very own copy of the XP version for use on Windows 2K. Go to this site and download MSconfig from XP. Once you have downloaded it, run it and click the Startup tab. To stop a program from running at Startup, uncheck it

Before you go unchecking everthing, go to Pacs Portals to see what you can and cannot uncheck.

I would imagine you boot time will be down to less than 90 seconds by the time you have finished all of this! Have fun!

Hi, Thanks for all that but it hasn't really helped my problem. When it says "Starting Up" with the blue bars, it gets about half way and then stops and thinks for ages over this mup.sys file. I looked over the net and it said that a local attacker could cause a problem with this file but nothing else. One of my cd roms has gone completely dead recently and it's still in there. Could these two things be linked (ie mup looking for cd rom but can't find it)? Thanks

Evening web users. I have just invested in 512 Mb of DDR memory to use in my Asus AZA266 motherboard. I would like to run 768 Mb but have read that Windows ME may not produce any real performance gain with more than 512 Mb on board. I have tinkered with memory management software without really knowing what I am doing. Any advice on how to get the best out of my memory would be appreciated - any user friendly software or basic registry tinkering considered. Thanks. Daniel

Ok, Daniel,
Are you sitting comfortably?

Right Click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the Performance Tab
click the File System Tab
In the Typical Role Of This Computer, Change from Desktop to Network server
Still in Performance, click on the Virtual Memory button.
Click Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
By default, the drive selected will be where you install Windows.
Choose your fastest drive or partition you got. If you have a faster but smaller partition, you can use that.
Defrag the drive first.
Now, set Both Maximum and Minimum values to 2½ of your actual RAM available.
So as you have 512MB you want to set it 1280.
You need to restart to take effect.
For hundreds of other Windows ME tweaks, visit Axcel216

How to I check that the printer is set as default for IE6?

Graham
Open Internet Explorer
Go To File | Print
On the General tab, in the Select Printer window, you should see your printer with a tick by it

When I go to print a text document in Microsoft word, I cannot seem to work out how I can print it using black ink only. When I right click, or choose print from the file menu, the printer starts up and uses the coloured ink for the document. I am using Windows ME and Word 2000. Can anyone help, to save my coloured ink?

Which printer, Ross? Most printers give you the option to print in B&W (sometimes grayscale) in the Preferences section when the Printer Dialog box pops up

Hi Iain, my printer is an Epson C40sx. My problem is that when I go to print in Word, I am not getting the chance to choose a colour (as I do in other applications), because the Printer Dialog box does not appear, it just goes straight to the printer and prints.

Ross,
This may appear to be a stupid question, but how are you printing?

Are you using the printer icon in the Toolbar
or
Are you using File | Print

If you are using the first method, try using the second
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Sat Oct 05 16:48 2002
reply

Hi Iain, it was not a stupid question. If I use the printer icon in the toolbar then the printer starts up automatically. When I go to file / print and click, all that happens is that the top bar on my screen which describes the name of my file, flashes and I have to use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to close the page. Then in my folder where the file is, I now have a duplicate file, slightly lighter in colour than the original and it has a ~$ at the beginning of it. Any ideas!!!
Ross Hunter - Dundee - Sat Oct 05 18:24 2002
reply

Ok, The first method I described is by design as it is meant to be a shortcut, an instant print.
The second method was meant to be the Standard method, The ~(tilda)$ means a temporary file, and unless you have made any alterations to the original file that you wish to keep, you can safely delete it

I am going to direct you to M$KB 304422 which is a printing troubleshooter for WORD 2000. I hope this helps

After reloading win98 I rebooted my PC. When the desktop appeared all icons briefly converted to windows logo before settling. Now when going on the net and downloading favorite sites I am unable to bring up their favicons ie. hotmails butterfly. Any help or advice will be appreciated thanks.

Keith if t advice given you before regarding favourites isn't working, I would suggest that you click your Favourite link, so that you get to the site
Now go to Favorites
Right click the Link that you just clicked and click DeleteNow add the site to Favorites, it may be that the icons are no longer in your temporary Internet Files, and that re-creating the favourites will re-associate the icon

Thanks Iain, tried deleting and adding +- 4 times now no luck. think it might have something to do with windows (see my ref. to desktop). but what?. its got me baffled.
keith - oldham - Fri Oct 04 20:32 2002
reply

No, Keith, the fact you are getting the default M$ icons means your system is probably working a lot FASTER than it was before.
However if you are concerned, you can rebuild your Icon cache file.
Open Windows Explorer
Find c:\Windows\ShellIconCachein the right pane
Right Click it and Click Delete
Click YES when it asks if you want to snd ShellIconCache to the Recycle Bin
Reboot your computer

It will take a bit longer to reboot as Windows will have to rebuild the Icon Cache

Once again thanks for replying. I recently did a reformat of the hard disc so this could possibly explain the increase in speed? as well as using the dustbuster program to clear out all all redundant? files. Will try to rebuild cache. Thanks again for allowing me to take up your valuble time.
Keith - Oldham - Sat Oct 05 09:47 2002
reply

I noticed you mentioned that you had done a reformat, and was trying to explain (obviously not very well} that that was the reason for it. The fact that you have used dust buster might explain though the reason why the favicons aren't working, as one of the first things it does is clear out all your temporary internet files. I, afraid you have to resign yourself to not having them

Your explanation was ok I'm just a bit of a thicko when it comes to PC's. Re-install Micro$oft Virtual Machine 3805 from the linked site, and then make sure that you do a Micro$oft update, to fix a minor security issue with Virtual update

Hi. Can anyone explain why my Teac 24x cd-rw takes 9mins to burn a full cd? I use nero-burning rom to make them, and set the burn speed to 24x, but it still takes around 9mins when it should ideally take arond 3 at this speed! Yours Alex

Unless they have come on a lot in the past year, I think you'll find that 24 is the read speed and it writes at about 8.

They've come a very long way in a year- you can get them writing at 48x now! But this one definately writes at 24x,re-writes at 12x and reads at 40x. You probably can't get them that slow anymore! Thanks again Alex

Hi Iain Can you help me I have been well and truly stuffed! I have AVG anti virus and Zone Alarm and through I was well protected. This afternoon I have been infected by what AVG call the I-Worm and it can clean it or give me any information or even let me put it in the vault! It has the follwing infection details C:\windows\system\catc.exe and C:\windows\system\uavuaku.dll I am running Windows millenium and I can't get rid of it or even find it in the AVG database please help me?????
Penny - London - Wed Oct 02 16:42 2002

Penny
I am confused!! If AVG has caught it, you aren't infected, The fact is that AVG doesn't actually recognise the virus, but it does display characteristics of a virus, which probably means it is a virus!! (follow me?)
Basically, what it is saying is "I have found something that looks suspiciously like a virus, I don't know if it is a virus.
I don't want to delete it just in case it is something so important, that you're going to curse me til the day you die IF I delete it, so I would really like you to tell me what to do with it."

Go to Start | Programs | AVG 6.0 Antivirus System | AVG Help File
Click the Index tab and find Moving Infected Files to the AVG Virus Vault
That explains what you are doing when you move "things" to the vault

Make sure that you have updated AVG. Do another quick scan. If you haven't already done so, move the infected files to the vault

Once done, go to Start | Programs | AVG 6.0 Antivirus System | AVG Virus Vault | File | Delete
Neither of these files look like folders you should have, unless you've mispelled them ;) Shout back if you have a problem

Hi Iain Thanks for replying. My AVG is always up to date and I have just checked again to make sure. I have done another scan and it says that the 3 viruses hown cannot be removed from the infected object by healing. The entire object must be removed and it recommends that you put it into the vault. You then get a message saying it can put it in the vault as it cannot removes this C:\RESTORE\TEMP\A0029348.CPY. Obvioulsy I asked if it could display details and it said no and in then end I had to leave/ignore it on disc to get out of the window? Oh I hope you can help?

Hi Iain my spelling is awful I meant to say that it is says it cannot put it into the vault due not being able to heal part of it etc. I have spelt the location right though!

Hi Ian All sorted now thank goodness. Apparently it is the I-worm\keywo virus and after speaking to grisoft they wrote back and told me that the reason it could not put it in the vault is because the virus had infiltrated a system restore file and until I disabled system restore I could not get rind of it. So I have and it's done and my baby is back and well. Thanks once again for your interaction hope not to bother you soon!

Hi all I recently upgraded from WIndows 98 2nd edition to Me but had loads of problems with my(new) modem for some obscure reason after this.I've gone back to 98 and the modem is now behaving again. However some how during the swop back to 98 my sound has stopped working completely, not even the start up bleeps can be heard, also my graphics have gone blurry. I've been all through the control panel but I'm at a loss has to how to fix these problems. Any ideas please? The volume control is there on the taskbar, speakers are ok etc. Any tips gratefully received, still got pc 'L plates' so to speak. Thanks from Lisa.

Hmmm, this could take a bit of time. So we'll identify the problems one at a time.

Go to Start | Settings Control Panel.
Click Device ManagerAre there exclamation marks by any of the devices?
If so, could you post back which devices have the exclamation by them?
Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Oct 01 22:29 2002

Thanks Ian, I'd checked this previously, just checked it again and the only exclamation mark is against my printer port. I haven't got a printer connected at the moment cos I just send everything to my work pc and print it there.Have you got time to advise me on anything else I can try? Thanks, Lisa
Lisa - March - Tue Oct 08 19:51 2002
reply

We'll start with the Graphics if you don't mind, Lisa. You can live without sound, but you can't do without vision.
Before we go any further, has your mintor goot a Degauss button? This button which appears to do nothing on your monitor, removes excessive magnetic build up within your monitor which maybe causing the blurriness! Please don't ask me which one it might be suffce it to say it is a push button, not a twiddley knob

Unfortunately, windows may good at a lot of things, but identifying if a driver is working correctly is not a strong point
We may need to identify which Display adapter and which sound card you have.

If you wouldn't mind, I would like you to go to Belarc, download and run Advisor (708kb freeware).

Please post back what it says in the Display and Multimedia sections, thanks
