I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. Either delete the current address in the Address Bar as far as http:// and type in www.whatever, or delete the whole thing and type in http://www.whatever. I believe there is a way to get IE to complete addresses if you just type in www.whatever, but I can't remember what it is.
