Microphone

I must be a bit thick or something as I just can't get my microphone to work. I've tried most things to no avail. Any help much appreciated. I have after a lot of persuasion from my son gone on to msn messenger and he wants to be able to talk to me. I can hear him real good but he can't hear me.
