You might consider biting the bullet and buying the equipment yourself.
'Free' connection equipment is usually, but not always, poor quality; hence the comments regarding e.g. Wanadoo 'frog' modems, they are just not very good.
The ISP market is very volatile at the moment, e.g. AOL have price matched Wanadoo broadband 2Gb capped service with an uncapped service, with free hardware and unlimited customer support.
Look around, but the floor is moving as you sign up.
Join a service with a short contract period.
Wanadoo appear to be growing a very poor reputation across the board.
