Thats the first time I've ever heard that you must have the same OS. I communicate with lots of people using Messenger, web cam and mic and we all have different a OS. We have never had a problem.
I'm thinking that your machine might be getting pushed to it's limit. Try closing down all unnecessary programs before holding your conversation. Also go into Device Manger and find your modem. Highlight it and select Properties. Go to the power Management tab and make sure there isn't a tick in the Allow computer to turn this device off to save power.
