Default DVD ripper won't do a series! Why?

Hi one and all.
Over the past few months I've taken advantage of the price wars for Xmas and bought a few DVD box sets (films and series) and also a couple of 1 TB ext HDD to rip them to in avi format. Also bought one of those USB input to TV output converter boxes (plug in an ext HDD or SD card etc and play it on the TV). This way I can take a selection of films and comedy series for Xmas day for a choice to view (I'm sure there will still be arguments tho, but...).
The films seem to rip well (to avi) and I'm happy with that.

HOWEVER the series DVDs that have a few episodes on one DVD only seem to rip 1, 2, 3 but never all the episodes. For instance, Monty Python Series 1 has two DVDs. The first with 7 episodes on, the second with 6 episodes on. But when I rip either of them, the output is usually the same and only a couple of episodes!!

So I ask all you Brainiacs out there, is there a way of ripping a DVD that has multiple episodes on it as opposed to one film? I am willing to pay for a program (although a free one would always be nice) as all the DVDs are mine and the ripping is for personal use not copying and selling on (although I guess I can't prove that to you, a? )

Regards,

The Cell

[/ QUOTE ] It makes no difference who they are for, copying any copyrighted DVD is illegal. As to why it won't do what you want, I guess the owners of the series DVDs have done their best to stop you, using software built into the original. You don't say which particular piece of ripping software you are trying but have you been to their site?

Hi there "greysts".
I see you are a 'regular' who knows a thing or two and I'm new to this forum, sorry.

I understand that as you say [ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, very 20th century. I believe that by that very law all the people who have a video recorder, DVD recorder or a Sky box with hard drive or even those with a tape recorder who taped the Radio 1 charts years ago when it was on AM (I did) are all criminals that just haven't been caught yet.

As there is SO much nowadays about making ones PC a media machine, even recording via a TV 'dongle' direct to the hard drive and the fact that with hard drives over the 2 TB mark in the public domain now, and that to carry around over 1000 DVDs (sad I know, but I just get what I like) is quite difficult, so converting them to a smaller format so that I can carry around just one book sized hard drive is a real option, I don't really think I'll be on Interpols most wanted DVD abuser list.

Oh well, I did think this forum may have been a little more 21st century with advice, but it seems that the first (and only so far) reply is useless and wasn't really worth the effort.

Thanks for that but guess I won't be coming back here for any real help or advice. Shame really as I enjoy the mag.

Regards,

[/ QUOTE ]That's referred to, in copyright law, as 'time shifting' and is permitted for personal use. i.e. you may record a broadcast as it goes out for future viewing/listening at a more convenient time, you may not duplicate or distribute that recording.

It does NOT apply to pre-recorded material such as VHS, DVD, CD, Bluray, etc. They are all protected, absolutely, under copyright law.

Yes, there are often ways and means of circumventing (breaking) the law but we're not about to start advocating it on this forum considering it's part of a media company that cherishes and protects it's own copyright material.

Incidentally, actively protecting one's copyright/intellectual property is, in fact, a very 21st century attitude...
