Default Power of Twitter discussed on the Moral Maze

If you enjoyed the News Feature in the current issue of Web User, which examined the increasing social influence of Twitter, you should listen again to Saturday's edition of The Moral Maze on Radio 4.

Guided as always by the host Michael Buerk, the panel discussed recent high-profile Twitter-led campaigns, such as the outrage against Jan Moir's Stephen Gately column. It was a fascinating and thought-provoking 45 minutes...and certainly more interesting than watching The X-Factor, or whatever it is most people do on a Saturday night...

I enjoyed the feature in WU although I don't use Twitter and I'm never likely to do so. I know I definitely wouldn't enjoy any radio programme in which the execrable Melanie Phillips is participating!
I have heard The Moral Maze in the past and she and Claire Fox were 2 of the main reasons why I stopped listening to it. Another reason was that David Starkey, a former panellist on that programme, explained how each member had a particular rôle to play, so it wasn't exactly a spontaneous debate.
I don't watch The X Factor either!

I share your reticence about Melanie Phillips, Madeline, but I found myself in the surprise position of agreeing with her during the debate.

There was no Claire Fox, you'll be pleased to know. . .

[/ QUOTE ]Me too, I was expecting the usual small-minded Daily Wail invective but was surprised at her apparent level headedness on this occasion.

As for democracy or 'mob rule' - democracy is mob rule by definition, isn't it.

I'll just have to take the word of both of you. I'm sure MP has 'good days', but I loathe her so much that I really couldn't bear to listen to her even in 'nice mode'!
The programme really went downhill after David Starkey left; he was so entertainingly rude! I'm glad to hear there was no CF.
I wasn't too keen on Michael Gove either, but I don't think he's there now.

I wasn't able to listen but I strongly agree that twitter is such an influential site these days. No argue about that.
