Default More Start Up Problems

Can anyone help with a problem I have with my Acer Aspire 5050 laptop which I am using as my main computer after my HP desktop gave up the ghost. It is running Vista home premium with all service packs installed. It is running AVG which was upgraded for 8.5 to 9.0 this past week.

After I switch on it takes a couple of minutes to reach the login page. After that it takes another 3 or 4 minutes to confirm it has connected to the internet and my gmail notifier window. After clicking OK on that the HDD busy light is almost solid for over ten more minutes which means I can't actually do any work for twenty minutes after switching on. Well, I can but everything works in a very jerky fashion until the hard disk has stopped being busy.

I would imagine this is some sort of scan going on but I have forgotten how to verify what programs are running at start up.

AVG 8.5 allowed you to turn it off temporarily but amazingly 9.0 does not and it seems the only way to turn it off is to uninstall it.

I do not have any other Virus or Spyware programs installed so if anyone can give me some tips as to how I can discover what is going on when I boot up I would be very grateful.

Can you launch the Task manager - Ctrl + Shift + Esc - which might indicate what is running and keeping the hard drive busy for over 10 minutes?

Thanks for the tip Mike. It comes up with a list 117 processes most of them seemingly related to AVG. Obviously I am going to have to delve into this further though as it happens since I posted my start up time has got a lot better. Thanks again

Just thought I would post confirmation that the problem was AVG. To verify this I uninstalled it and installed Kaspersky and the improvement is dramatic.

Obviously AVG was doing a scan of some sort. Now I wouldn't have minded so muck if this had been confined to the initial boot up of the day but as I shut down and boot up several times a day it was immensely annoying and could not have been of much concern if Kaspersky doesn't do the same thing
