laptop keyboard keeps changing

Hi all i have a hp 550 lappie and the keyboard keeps changing and some of the keys dont work ie t y, right arrow. also i assumed that somehow i managed to change the langauge as sometimes the letters are in another form (a e with a little asterisk on top).and when i use the pad to click on desktop instead of opening the programme it opens the properties page, when i click some icons in the control panel it comes up with (properties are not available).is there a to reset the keyboard to default i have checked langauge and input everything is set to english uk.can i reset the keyboard to qwerty even though i think that is the default, I have looked through the foruns including hp.does it have anything to do with hotkeys again i dont think i have any Thanks in advance Iain ( pc im using a diferent k/b on a nother pc) also it runs win vista
