home network just started to ask for password?

Hi my home net work has been working fine then I added an external hard drive and now
when I try to access my hard drives (C, D) on my Desk top pc it asked me for a password, I have never set up any passwords?

My set up is Main PC desktop running XP pro sp3, Advent netbook Xp home sp3
wireless networked though Edimax router

when I boot the desktop in safe mode all drive can be accessed
but when I boot normally I can access dvd, rom, usb, printer but not the hard drives it keeps asking for a password

Help please this is driving me nuts!

Presumably you are prompted for both a Username and Password? If so, type in the Username that you're logged in to the XP Pro PC with and leave the Password field blank. Does that let you access the shared drives (although the root of a drive shouldn't normally be shared)?

Yes I am prompted but I do not log in with a User name or password on the XP Pro PC or the net book. I am able to access Printer USB ports DVD drives on the XP Pro PC but not C D or USB hard drives, all drives on net book are accssable from the PC

PS the problem started around the 10 Oct the same time that downloads for SPack 3.5 were installed, could this be responsible for the problem?

re your last reply the Requester is asking for a password only, user name field not active.
