Default CD ROM not recognising any CD

My Presario has suddenly stopped recognising any disc put into the CD ROM. It has worked fine for three years but now will not play any music ,pictures or installation disc. When inserted the disc appears next to cursor for 30 seconds but no response from computor. Can you help please?

have you tried reinstalling the drive ?

right click on MY COMPUTER >> properties >> hardware >> device manager
then scroll down to dvd\cd rom drives, click on it to expand it, then right click on your cd rom drive and select UNINSTALL.

now reboot the computer, the new hardware wizard will find it and reinstall it.

Hi Bricat
Thanks so much for response but regret after uninstalling and restarting the computor, it showed new hardware had been found and reloaded but regret still no disc will be recognised in the cd rom. Any other ideas or is it terminal?

put a disc in the drive, then click on START >> MY COMPUTER.

look at your disc drive, does it show a cd there, if it does, right click on the drive and select play.

you can do that with any disc you insert.
it looks like AUTORUN has been disabled.

to enable AUTORUN :-

1. Access the System Properties Dialog. right click MY COMPUTER select HARDWARE.
2. Select the Device Manager tab.
3. Select the CD-ROM DVD drives.
4. Select the entry for your CD-ROM drive. ( right click on it)
5. Select Properties.
6. Select the Settings tab.
7. Turn on the Auto insert notification option.
8. Select OK.
9. Select OK.

Happy to help.

this is easier.

click on MY COMPUTER.

on your cd\dvd drive right click and select properties. click on AUTOPLAY at the top.

there you can select what action it should take when you insert a cd\dvd.
