Updates Windows XP fails

Automatic updates for windows XP (Home) fails since a month or so without having made changes to the system. I'm at SP3 level. I got error message regarding CryptSvs Service. It does not run, but when verified in Services list it is configured to start Automatically. Manal Starting this service ends in a Error 1290 0x50a.
