Default CPU running at 100% after bootup. Really slow computer..please help!!

Hello, I am having a problem with my computer.

Shortly after bootup my CPU appears to be running at 100% even though I am not actually doing anything apart from running the startup/background processes This is slowing up my system VERY much!!!.

My system is using Windows XP SP3, an Athalon 3400 64 Processor, 1024MB DDR memory and a 200GB harddrive (not full).

I use the recommended tools i.e. CCleaner, Norton Antivirus, Adaware, Winpatrol etc to clean up my system and always update my system/check for viruses/spyware on a regular basis. I have run all of my normal scans and they have all come back negative.

I have therefore run a Hijackthis log in the hope that someone can please help. The results are below

Welcome to the Webuser forum.

lets sort your security out first

with this lot running, I'm surprised it boots up at all

SpywareGuard
WinPatrol
Ad-Aware
ThreatFire
Sandboxie
a-squared Free Service
IObit Security 360

work out which ONE you want to keep and uninstall the rest.

then reboot and post a fresh HJT log.

Default Re: CPU running at 100% after bootup. Really slow computer..please help!!

Hello. Thanks for your help. I realise that I have a few(!) security programs running and that I probably dont need all of them as they are (probably) doing the same job.

Would it still be overkill to keep

- Winpatrol (to monitor changes to my computer)
- Adaware (for spyware etc)
- Sandboxie (for using with my internet browser)

in addition to Norton (the latest version i.e. supposed to be less of a drain on system resources or so I have read)

I am prepared to uninstall programs however it is difficult to know which ones to actually keep.

Many thanks - Steven

i would say you can afford to get rid of adaware and keep the other 2.
