Default Windows Update

The other day when I ran windows update and asked it to check for updates I got a requester to update windows update before it would do this.
Are Microsoft changing the way Microsoft update works?

If nobody else got that message I might have been mugged into installing malware so I have two reasons for asking!

I'd still like to hear what the regulars say but I found this

http://blogs.technet.com/mu/default.aspx

link

I'm also wondering if both these links one with Instant mark up and the other just pasted both work!

I've read about this somewhere fairly recently, although I can't remember where! I also remember them doing something similar some time ago. I don't think it's anything to worry about, just have Automatic Updates on and let them do it. If I remember rightly, I didn't notice any change in the way that updates were delivered when MS did this before.

By the way, both of your links work!

Thanks Madeline, I always get a bit wary when things change on the PC.
NIS 2010 hasn't complained so it's all looking promising.

That is until next Superpatch Tuesday when something or other is almost sure to come off the rails!

You're welcome. I think they just like to confuse and scare us!

Don't even think about Patch Tuesday!

First check wuauclt.exe in C:\Windows\System32 > Properties > Details tab which should show File Version 7.4.7600.226 if you already have the update, if not download the version required for your operating system from the link below.

Thanks Ray. I checked the file version and it's the one you've posted. Apparently I got it on 06/08/2009 but I don't remember it!

My version shows as 7.2.6001.788, but I have auto-update enabled and everything seems to be O K.

Is it best that I download the new version?

Thanks.

I have the same version on my Desktop running XP obviously because it hasn't been offered by WU to me yet, my Vista system is the one I was talking about earlier. Downloading it shouldn't make any difference to your machine, if it throws up an error it will revert any changes. I'll download it now anyway and let you know but it may be later because I have to exit all running programs. A reboot is not required for XP.

Updated, no apparent problems.
