Default Scan whole computer

My daughter has the latest "free" version of AVG Anti-Virus installed on her laptop and i noticed that she had selected the option "scan the whole computer". It was still running the scan 2hours later. Is this normal?

It depends what size the hard drive is and how much of it is being used.

If it's anything like NIS and Kaspersky then 2 hours for a full scan is quite likely especially, as Bricat says, if there are a lot of files.

I'm using NIS 2009 which takes around 1½ to 1¾ hours to scan my PC, only a little less than 2 hours. According to Norton, it scans about 550,000 files.
