Re: Why recommend AVG?
so it had nothing to do with the sites that he was surfing .
there isn't an antivirus that makes allowances for stupidity.
if you download a nasty or install a nasty you are bypassing your security.
AVG is one of the best FREE antivirus programs, if you want the best protection then you'll have to pay for it.

Re: Why recommend AVG?
I doubt that they were all virus's - there couldn't be 64 virus's in the wild that the security community weren't aware of assuming the computer had the latest definitions installed. An antivirus/spyware/malware program is only any good if it is up to date.

Re: Why recommend AVG?
I use Avast...used to use AVG 8.5....
Doesn't really matter what AV you use, it's only as good as the person using it.
My missus will open anything, and I mean anything.....
Attachments on Emails from unknown senders, facebook apps., any website under the sun.
I have to keep a really good, up to date ghost copy, just to keep tabs with her browsing.
All any AV program does, is answer your 'internet door' for you. The Virus knocks at the door, your AV answers & politely asks it to go away.
Sounds like your mate has done what my missus does.....
Invites the virus in, makes it a cup of tea, puts its favourite channel on the telly, cooks tea for it, then tucks it in for a good nights sleep.
My missus renders any AV program almost obsolete.....
If you leave the door open, there's no telling who will wander in.........

Re: Why recommend AVG?
The person is actually a she and is very pc literate.
AVG missed 64 virus's and they were well known virus's.
I've heard of 74 virus's being missed on a companies machine running the AVG pro version in the past this was about a year ago.
AVG = a pile of profanity removed free or paid versions.

Re: Why recommend AVG?
Sounds more like there could be that number of infected files rather than 64 separate infections. Anyway....
I have no bias, I don't use AVG, and haven't for quite some time. However, for ease of some friends who wanted to have it, I've installed on a number of machines. The friends range from scarily similar to MugsMoney's OH, to cautious and newish to the internet. Not one of them has had more than the odd one infection, but they've all had safe surfing lectures, had Spywareblaster installed and have automatic updates enabled. I fail to find AVG a bad product when I look at the range of knowledge and the frequency of their surfing, but maybe an AV alone isn't sufficient for anybody but the ultra cautious.

Dellboy keeps repeating such claims, and continues to ignore the sensible comments and reservations made by others regarding AVG. Anyone new wanting help or advice from this thread is not going to be impressed by this level of discussion.
