Default Cleaning out my PC.

My HDD is filling up and I have hardly any space.

So I have got rid of loads of installed software (That I don't need anymore) and now I have come to security.

I have (over the years horded up the following)

Avast anti-virus.
Sophos anti root kit
Super anti-spyware
spyware blaster
Malwarebites anti-malware
spyware terminator
sbybot s&d
Mcafee site advisor
Comodo Verification engine.
And comodo firewall.

I'm attached to them all, and don't know if I should get rid of any.

What do you think?

What should I keep and what could I get rid of safely.

Thank you in advance.

Apart from antivirus and firewall which you obviously need , I would keep at least Spywareblaster (small program, uses no resources) and MBAM - small, effective program and lightweight to run IMHO. Those are two I wouldn't do without.

Avast Home Edition has anti-rookit built-in to it, so do you need two things carrying out the same function?

I never knew Avast had an anti-rootkit in the program, I shall get rid of sophos anti-rootkit.

Spyware terminator seems resource hungry, that shall go too.

If you don't use it already you might like to try Revo Uninstaller when removing files. It seems to do a more complete job than Add or Remove Programs.

Which ever method you choose try Search Everything as this finds remnants of files that have not been removed by other methods.

As always, proceed with care and backup everything until you happy that nothing untoward has occurred.

Thank's Doublell.

I already use Revo uninstaller- I think it was in a issue of WU a while ago now.

Great program, very handy and free!

Just deciding if I should keep Mcafee site advisor. I use FF3 and they have anti fraud etc...

I have tried a number of security programs but my present set-up is Avast AV, Commodo Firewall, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I also run Trend Housecall online scanner periodically to double-check that everything is OK. On a pen drive I have McAfee Stinger standalone AV scanner and Norman Malware Cleaner which I occasionally run.

Like you I use FF3, and have SiteAdvisor which I find useful and informative. Unless you are really pushed for space I would be inclined to keep SiteAdvisor.

With a 150GB main hard drive, and two additional hard drives {one internal and one external} that give in a further 500GB, space for me is not a problem.

Wow! Space really isn't a problem for you!

I have. [Drum roll please] 40gb HDD!!!!!

AND

It's partitioned with the recovery console.

So the main space is about 30gb. Now add all the essentials for the pc to run.... It's cramped!

I was thinking of just buying a new hdd and copying this one on to it.
A 500bg should do.

Why not just get another hard drive and make it your slave drive.
My main drive is only 40GB, which is ample for everything you need programme wise. (Mine only take up 10% of the drive).
My slave drive which is 250GB, contains all my documents, pictures, videos, films etc.
By only having a small Hard Drive as my master it is easier to "keep clean" and also all my files are always safe on the slave drive.

It's ok to say but harder to install (For me anyway)

Hardware is not my cup'o'otea. (I usually break things)

An external HDD will solve your problem. You won't then need to get rid of any of your security systems.
