Default New from Yahoo...Zimbra Desktop Email (This years "Gmail"?)

Yahoo! have a possible winner here With Zimbra Desktop which is an an Email Client Package
Which I thought was linked only to the Yahoo email box for to read it online and Has an unlimited capacity storage Previously You would have to pay for this bur this is totally Free to anyone...
And theres more...Keep reading... This is a stand alone client which Has to be downloaded/installed Download size(For Windows) is in the region of 38MB!(Apple and Linux optimised versions too)But you do get this capability..You can now work offline with your Yahoo Mail too. Compose Emails for later posting Only clients you can do that with currently are Outlook Express and AOL

And Even more Goodies for you...
Easily set up Zimbra, Yahoo! Mail Plus, AOL and Gmail email accounts with the Account Wizard
Any POP or IMAP email account can be added to Zimbra Desktop
No limit to the size of your email storage
It works online and offline

NOTE:The Zimbra Email Client is an open source Program ...Unknown if its any good

I like the Idea of bringing Gmail "Offline" I have most of my Forum notifications going via that Program

Am looking Forward to trying this out...Only thing that concerns me is with the email being loaded onto the Computer. Is it still secure? And how much diskspace will be used?

If You want to hang on, Yahoo are bringing a Web based Client version out ("in a few Quarters"< Yahoos "quote")Guessing 6 to 9 months?

The W/U server DID NOT mangle your links again. You didn't type them properly in the first place. Don't blame a computer for your own short comings.

For a change we had a very fast download getting 125Kbps Plus and Downloaded the "38MB" in 6 Mins:49 seconds!

Either there is No traffic, or Its a very fast server?
And their numbers are wrong the File(for Windows) is 46 MB Not 38MB
Have a feeling it'll ask for Firewall access?

More Details... It requires 153 MB Webspace
For a First time "install" turn off antivirus and re-enable afterwards Does ask for Firewall access later.

I have been playing around with (Yahoo)Zimbra Desktop which if you Send any Mail from that program whoever recieves it(also Using Zimbra) Gets your Name(The account holder) displayed instead of your Email address, which is visible if you Pass the Mouse pointer over it. A very good simple idea Spammers would have to make 100's of accounts to Spam from here
So if you Use this like an Internal Mail The Security Must be Quite Good NOTE External Mail even from Yourself is Unchanged! Perhaps they want to look at that for a future update?
And all the Different Email Types have been kept apart...Am Running AOL as I Post this, Adding Yahoo later.

Other Issues Some of the minor Buttons Not working. Layout is not bad.Notes Hyperlinks made here when they have Landed at the Other End are non runners
Yet they work when recieved by the Program!

Despite these Bugs And Others to be found I think this is going to be rather good and Mozilla/Thunderbird will have a challenger for its W/U Gold award soon

I shall give it 8/10 with the bugs and an easy 9 if they are fixed
The Web based Client(Due in 9ish? months) won't rate much if they are still in Situ
PS Something I don't know what to do. How to setup IMAP access on Gmail to make it display here Can do POP.
Gmails IMAP Setup list is out of Date .Only Option is to Risk using the *Other option
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...p;answer=75726
HELP!
PPS The "Sychronise mail" button can top up your Mail. You can Clear the Mail totally Leaving the Original Mail on the Server intact. And if you made a Mistake or retain a Post on Zinbra and Delete the Original ...Worth a play about with

NO Spam has come across to Zinbra, but its early days

Good News Gmail is easy to transfer with IMAP (Only program) Have to go over to Gmail Settings First and Enable IMAP to get the Port Numbers for Zimbra to work with it Do this Before you enter any registration details on Zimbra OK?

All other IMAP Programs Have their own port settings so unless you have them to hand and they have 2 addresses for the incoming and outgoing Posts
Here are Gmails:imap.gmail.com *Incoming Mail Server *Port:993
smtp.gmail.com *Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server *Port: 465
Without the correct port numbers and those addresses Your mailbox is Inactive I'm sure we'll find the Missing port numbers later
Little extra safety tip below both the Boxes there is a Tick box marked Use an encrypted connection (SSL) when accessing this server
Just tick them for Piece of Mind .
