Default The end of the line?

My old Evesham pc has been running windows ME reasonably well for my needs - e-mails, web access, the odd office task and playing music (using ashampoo)after I bought an XP machine for the rest of the family to use.
I have been using AVG for anti-virus and firefox 2. Tried to load AVG 8.0 and firefox 3 but got a message saying ME will not support either.
Any ideas on a reasonably cheap OS upgrade that will leave me protected or an alternative anti-virus software.
On a slightly separate note, perhaps this is something that Webuser could run an article on ie the best software etc for old machines. It seems a bit expensive to keep updating to get the latest version of stuff.

www.oldversion.com has a number of older versions of software which are no longer available because of age, but remember, there is likely to be little or no support

As the poster couldn't be bothered replying to the advice given at the time , i don't think now , almost a year later , there's going to be any feedback.
