dial-up advice please

non-techie ,help required.
ibm thinkpad 600,aol dial-up
have uninstalled aol after their upgrade and ordered broadband ,but that will take 2-3 weeks apparently
i can't dial-up to an isp ,through windows,internet explorer although
my modem works and my phone line works.
using hyperterminal connection ,i connect and then get error message 'ppp authorization failed'
any ideas gratefully received

finally got on-line after 2 weeks of messing about.
I think I may have been trying to use out of date dial-up numbers for some of the time I was trying to get on-line ,and I am really not sure what I have changed within my settings to get past the 'ppp authorization failed'
I hope everybody who has suffered from aols upgrade has managed to get connected
