Default win me help

hi,
last week i started having some problems with my pc and i supposed it was some sort of malware, so i posted my hjt log in the appropriate forum, however after 21 posts the hjt helpertold me to passs my problem to this forum. here's what's been going on:
i started getting a pop up with every search i made in google, when i tried to close this pop up i received a message saying...'iexplore has caused an error in gdi.exe and will be closed'. then my pc often frose and i had to reboot. after having tried with search and destroy and ad aware, and a sqared, the helper told me to try with smitfraudfix and combofix.non of these started because a message saying 'error cmd.exe is not present' appeared. so he rechecked my log and told me that lots of stuff was missing. he suggested that i post here and eventually reinstall my operating system.please help me

Looking at your HJT log I have to agree, there is a pile of stuff missing. Do you have your Windows Me CD available?

Lucky you!! We first need to see if that CD can be used to boot up your PC. Place the CD in the drive and reboot the PC. Does it boot from the CD? If it doesn't you will need to go into the BIOS and change the boot order. Have a look at this to show you how to get into the BIOS.

Once you've got the PC to boot up from the CD come back for the next step.

The original boot order is fine. The PC looks for a boot floppy then the CD and finally the hard disk. The message you get about not finding the boot track on the CD suggests to me that the CD you have is not actually a full Windows Me CD. Can you tell me what is printed on the face of the CD? Also have a look at the root directory of the CD and tell me what files are showing.

ok you're right, on the face of the cd is written:
windows millenium edition
aggiornamento(update)

when i explore the cd content there are six folders:
add-ons
autorun
cdsample
drivers
tools
win9x

then there are twon txt files, a setup package
and an autorun intruction

Yes it's an update CD rather than full installation. That means it needs an old version of Windows (95,98) to be on the PC first. Although this means you can't start from scratch and re-install everything you might be able to use it to update your current installation. Try running setup.exe on the CD and see what it tells you.

I don't think it will work anyway as it's just not the correct CD. I think we've reached the end of the line. The only choice I can see is for you to buy the correct version. At this point you might want to think about upgrading to XP as there is absolutely no point in buying an out of date operating system CD. The only problem is if your PC has the minimum specification required to run XP such as 512mb RAM and a 60gb hard disk.
