Default RHR - General PC (25)

Hiya, I have two USB Ports. As I use these for my scanner, webcam, digicam (and I'm told one Port will be used when I go on broadband shortly) I would like to purchase an adapter to add more ports so that I don't have to keep unplugging etc. Would appreciate any advice as to what is the best adapter to buy and where's the best place to buy. With many thanks for any help you can give me.

I spoke to our IS department for advise at work on this very same subject and they advised as follows - to purchase a Belkin 4 port hub (£30 pc world) but to make sure it is the powered version - even though Belkin advise you can use them without power the power hungry devices may not work properly also our IT guy!! blew some resistor on his pc for trying to use it without - it's only 1.4 volts anyway so it's hardly going to impact on your lecy bill!!, I also did a self install broadband at the same time - i used one of the 2 PC USB ports for my broadband modem (so it is dedicated) then used the other for my Belkin 4 port Hub with all my devices, scanner, printer etc plugged into that. The Belkin is very easy to install and so was the modem. I can highly recommend the US Robotics Sureconnect ADSL modem - as reviewed in this weeks Web-User.

You can buy USB hubs for about £20 from computer fairs or hardware shops.
These plug into one of your USB sockets, but give you an extra 4 slots.
Some USB Devices, especially ADSL modems, however, are none too keen on playing second fiddle in these hubs.
Personally, I would invest in a USB 2.0 PCI card.
You will need Windows 98 and above to run one, and a spare PCI slot.
As you can see, they can be picked up for around £25 for a four port card and they are backwards compatible with USB 1 devices, but they can transfer data a little quicker

Thank you Iain, I left another msg for you in the e-mail forum too! Think I will probably buy a Hub cos I don't really like the idea of opening up my tower & messing around but I more than appreciate both options you've given me. Out of curiousity, have you bought from Komplett over the internet as I've never heard of them before. Thanks again, Iain.

I have regularly purchased from them, as you can see their prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent. I found them quite by accident about 18 months ago when looking for M$ XP Pro, and signed up to their special offers mailing. I wish I hadn't because it is torture to have to pass up some of their offers!!
As a rule, if it is stock, you normally get your item within 3 days.

I am not associated with the company, so feel free to shop around, but suffice it to say, I am more than happy to shop with them!

Thanks again Iain. I know you'd only recommend good sites (felt a bit bad after I posted last msg asking you!). Yes, I noticed how good the price was cos I checked on another site and same Hub is £25.99! Thanks for saving me money too!

Advice on home networking, please
I would like to network my home PCs. I have 2 desktops, one upstairs (Win Xp), one downstairs (Me), and a laptop (Me). I wish to access my ADSL connection and allow the remote use of peripherals. Now although I know PCs themselves inside out, I'm not at all up on networking. So my questions are:

I'm assuming the best (although costliest) route for my setup is wireless through a router. Am I right? Any recommendations, bearing in mind that as usual I would like to do this as cheap as is sensible? My ADSL modem is an Alcatel Speed Touch (the cheap green one). Can I continue to use it? Am I right in thinking that some routers have an ADSL modem built-in? If no to both, any recommendations? And finally, are the software tools within windows sufficient to run such a network? If not, what would I need?

I'm asking this question in the hope that someone either knows the answers, or can refer me to an appropriate site.

Thanks in advance,

TFC

TFC
Routers start from about the same price or a little more than your "frog", and increase depending on the capabilities of the Router, the number of ports and the LAN speed, (the cheaper ones have 10TBase capability)
A router is only essential if you have more than one user REGULARLY using the internet at the same time

Personally, I have four machines, 1 XP Pro, and the others running a mixed bag of Windows operating systems, one MRI 5port 100Mbps Switch (cost £40), one Fujitsu FDX310 ADSL modem, and 3 runs of 15m cat 5 cabling, which I made up myself. (but any good cable company would do a 15m run under a tenner)

, using the XP Pro Machine as a server.

This means this setup is probably the cheapest option for a 3 or more pc configuration. In your case,TFC, I would certainly use the XP machine as the ICS machine, if at all possible, as the wizard makes the network very easy to set up.

I have realised, as I was writing this out, that I really do need get out more often ;^)

Hi, Can anyone advise on this please? My PC has an "ordinary" CD drive and also a CDRW drive. In addition it has a built-in 250Mb Zip drive and a floppy drive as well as, naturally, a hard disc (IDE). I have recently been given a brand new hard disc and am wondering if it is possible to add this to my system. According to the BIOS setup the current configuration is: Primary IDE Master = [Hard disc] Primary IDE Slave = [Zip Drive] Secondary IDE Master = [CD Rom] Secondary IDE Slave = [CD Rom] The two master cables each have their own connector on the motherboard but I don't know whether the system is capable of supporting a second HD or how it should be connected and designated. The original HD is 20 GB as is also the new one which is a Western Digital WD200. Another, minor, point is that when I am using Windows Explorer to see what is on the Zip disc, as soon as I eject it I get an error message to say that one of the CD drives is "Not Ready". I am not particularly bothered by this - just curious. I am using Windows 98 SE in a machine with 128 Mb RAM and an Athlon 1000 MHz processor having previously been using Windows ME and found it wanting (to say the least) Any help gratefully received Chris
Chris - Westgate on Sea - Fri Nov 22 09:11 2002

Chris
You have two options:

Remove the Zip drive
(The zip drive is virtually redundant with a cd-rw drive installed
If you have a spare PCI slot available and a vacant slot in your tower, then install an IDE Controller card, (about £20) available from here to give yourself additional IDE channels
(I would suggest that you contemplate upgrading your Power Supply Unit if you consider this option)

Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Nov 22 11:37 2002
reply

Thanks Iain, I will try your second option as a colleague has a portable Zip drive but no CDRW and we find the Zip very useful. I have one last query, if it is not trying your patience too much: I have just spent a few days re-formatting my hard disc and installing Windows 98 SE. The computer worked fine for about a week and now it hangs on boot-up. CTRL+ALT+DEL reveals that STIMON.EXE is not responding and the boot-up continues successfully if I shut STIMON.EXE down. Ehat is STIMON.EXE, what is it not responding to, and how do I cure this problem? I DON'T want to re-format the HD again! many thanks, Chris
Chris - Westgate on Sea - Mon Nov 25 09:30 2002
reply

We should be able to fix you without a re-format!!
This is what it does, and this is hopefully how to fix it

Step 1: Rename the Stimon.exe File
Unplug all USB devices.
Insert a Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows 98 Startup disk into your computer, and then start the computer to a command prompt.
At the command prompt, type C:, and then press ENTER.
Type CD\Windows\System, and then press ENTER.
Type Rename Stimon.exe Stimon.old, and then press ENTER.
Remove the Windows Startup disk.
Step 2: Start Windows in Safe Mode and Remove the Registry Entry
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Restart the computer. When the Power On Self Test (POST) is completed, press and hold down the CTRL key.

The Windows 98 or Windows Me Startup menu appears.
Use the ARROW keys to select Safe mode, and then press ENTER.
In Windows Me, close the Help and Support window. In Windows 98, click OK on the Safe Mode message that appears.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, expand the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If StillImageMonitor does not appear in the Name list in the right pane of the Registry Editor window, expand the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the Export Registry File dialog box, type Run Key in the File name box, and then click Save.

The selected key is saved.
In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, right-click StillImageMonitor, and then click Delete on the shortcut menu that appears.
On the Confirm Value Delete message that appears, click Yes.
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer normally.
Step 3: Reinstall the Imaging Device
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to reinstall the USB imaging device. This replaces the registry entries and reinstalls the Still Image Monitor files.
I would try options 1 & 3 first

Hi Iain. There doesn't seem to be any difference between the contents of each file. Just the name of the track followed by .mp3.

These may seem like strange questions, but have you played the tracks of both colours or only one particular colour? And if so did it change colour AFTER being opened?
The reason I ask is that if you are viewing these in explorer, the links colours can CHANGE when the file has been opened, and I was wondering if this was the case. (I hoped I explained myself well enough there)

Is anyone there???? Third request for help!!!!! Please help with 2 probs: 1. A visit to PC Pitstop tells me my memory performance is low (50%). I have 320Mb RAM (64 + 256) installed, but Pitstop reports RAM installed = 128Mb (0+0+64+64), Windows RAM = 320Mb, level 1 cache = 16kb, level 2 cache = 512kb. 2. Using BT Home Highway ISDN, I often get a "no dial tone" message when trying to connect. The only way to clear this seems to be to pull out, then reconnect the USB lead. BT tell me that there is a problem with my ALi PCI to USB open host controller. I am using Win98SE, any ideas? Thanks in advance, Ed.

The best method, whilst not perfect, would be to invest in a set of high quality boom mic headphones. The best filter out background sounds, and eliminate feedback.
There are two other options
Move your mic further away from your mouth
Reduce the Mic volume in Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Audio | Sound Recording | Volume

Hi all, I back up the important files on my hard drive using cdrw. the problem i have is with Microsoft Access. I can copy my data base to cd but if i take it into the office to work on, it will not let me alter or change any data as it makes it into a read only file. Please note i copy the data base on to the hard drive and run it from there NOT direct from the cd. Is there anyway i can change it because there is not much point of having a back up if i cannot use it if the worse happened.

Andrew, using explorer find the file or the complete folder it's in. Right click on it and select properties. Now you can untick the "read only" attribute, and apply.

sorry this is longer than i thought!! there may be lots of answers and suggestions/solutions - but i'm after the most simple, reliable and staightforward - im running windows 98SE (i know it's not the most stable of operating systems and i've had problems in the past; like shutting down - i know this is a quirk of W98 but it does not do this so often now) however, i seem to be getting the odd pc freeze (lock up, keys/mouse does not work) than before, where i have to re-boot it then goes to scan-disc which is a pain to wait for then re-boot, i've downloaded some of the windows critical updates, but not all - and i've selected them one at a time (as it advises) so i'm able to check the system running after each update - i dont think the updates are the problem? I may have some software or programme/conflicts, just like marmite and cornflakes, i'm sure they all don't live together happily!!, i am told that "big fix" may be useful? but i've used this before and can't recall how much benefit it was (other than, yet another - start up enabled - background running item sat in the task bar that i'm trying to keep to a minimum as my pc seems to run better with less items running in the background)- but i have read since that "big fix" may now be concentrating more on the latest windows xp rather than older OS as 98SE so it may not be as beneficial any more?, (what do you think?) i know you dont pay for big fix and assume it is supported by the adverts? (but i also have norton firewall 2003 with ad-blocker! so it may not work anyway?), or should i connect to an on-line pc doctor or system test somewhere (please advise) that may be able to anylise my pc on-line to see what i have that may be poorly or need a service or tune up - Am i far away from milk and cornflakes or am i one of many that has the same typical pc problems?? Any comments much appreciated. Paul PS. Nice to see one of Iain W's letters printed in a recent web-user - he puts alot of time and effort in to helping readers on this website.

Paul, here's a nice quick check for your system. Put your Windows disk in the cd drive
Go to Start | Run
Type in SFC
This will do a check of your main Windows files
Go back to Start | Run
Type in Scanreg

This will do a check of your windows registry file, and restore any corrupted or damaged entries

Hi Derek!
I think I'm right in saying, you need a full version of Windows for instalation after a hard drive format. That could be Windows 95, then once you've loaded that you can then use an upgrade CD from there.

Good Luck!

Hi David You do not mention whether you audio is on board or is a PCI card. Either way you will need to download drivers. To do this just type in your Motherboard maker and board details or sound card maker and card number into a search engine such as google and that will give you the sites for which to download the audio drivers. Always try to get the divers from the manufacturers website first, they will be hidden away under support / drivers or downloads. Make sue you download the drivers for your operating system. Download to your desktop or to a specific folder as you can burn these to CD if you ever need to re-install them. If you cannot get the drivers here check the support section on Logitechs website. Just one word of caution David, set a restore point before you install the drivers so that you can turn it back if you have to. Unfortunately Win XP is friendly on the eye for all but with compatability issues raising its head Software makers are now charging extra for Win Xp drivers and/or products. Liam

Hi Dave From the info you have given here it sounds like it is on board sound. I would advise against updating the audio chipset on the motherboard unless you really know what you are doing but if you wish to do so here is the web address for the driver for this audio chipset Win 98,Me & 2000, http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/ MIGR-40643.html?doctype= This version was released on the 10/12/2001. What I do suggest is that you buy a PCI Sound Card from www.scan.co.uk (Creative Labs SB 128) £9.34 / (Creative Labs Sb 4.1 Digital PnP £14.68 the same one at PC World costs £29.99) you could also try www.dabs.com or www.jungle.com . These are near the bottom end of the range but will produce good sound quality and will have audio and speaker connectors. If you are into music/ editing / or home theatre then it may well pay to spend a little extra. Goodluck.

Hi Dave
Just try this web address out for Logitech Pro 4000 it contains new drivers for your camera. Beware as it may be a long download. Check it out and there is advice and a download if you have not updated your Win Xp to service pack 1. Because you have been getting sound from your speakers when using Win XP I think the problem is with the Logitech drivers so check out the site.

Hi, the most likely problem will be your monitor. It will more than likely be that it doesn't support standby mode. You can turn this of via the screen saver advanced options. Once it is turned of you should have no problems, just run the screen saver until you update your monitor and video card as new versions of these supoort standby modes much better. If and only if you are feeling confident it can also be turned of from within the bios at start up but probably best to find somebody to help you if your not feeling confident about it.

I have windows98. Recently upon starting up the system it scans as if the system has not been shut down properly. It then goes onto a screen which shows used and unused clusters. It started scanning these and so far found 20 bad files. It said it was moving them somewhere? but also said it could be due to a power failure but probably an impending hard drive failure. Is there anything we can do to stop our system from going down? we have saved all our important work to disk! Any advice???????

I'm afraid that with 20 bad clusters already hard disk failure is very likely to happen. Q. Does it make any odd sounds latley as that can also be a warning of impending failure? If it is running scan disk everytime you boot up the machine again possible file damage is being caused, likely due to hard disk problems. You assumtions sound right i'm sorry to say, a new hard could well be your next purchase for your machine! If the hard disk is about to go, then there is nothing you can do (apart form saving any valuble data)it is one of the few mechanicle devices' and they unfortunately wear out.
