Default 'PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING'

<hr width=100% size=1>
To make sure this board remains interesting to the thousands of visitors each day, could posters please stay within this remit and avoid starting threads that are not connected with the internet or computing.
<hr width=100% size=1>

This seems like the end of free, open and fun discussion in the open forum.

Final nail in coffin springs to mind.

Are the mods and admin going to delete / remove all posts that dont comply with this latest instruction. This should keep them busy for a week or so then there will be no posts at all in this forum.

Any one got any links for somwhere that has a open forum that allows open discussion.

Well said. I thought the open forum was a discussion area for any reasonable subject and for jokes etc.

It's ridiculous to limit it strictly to the internet or computing, especially since we've not got a chat room. I understand about the moderator thing, but this route will make for an extremely boring open forum. The vast majority of members are responsible individuals who use the open forum for some light relief from the trials and tribulations of computers/internet, not to deliberately offend others or cause problems. It's ran fine for ages. Why change it when changing it as suggested will, in my opinion, [ah em!] off most members, some of whom will inevitably give all the WU forums a miss if these changes are adhered to?

We have had the "burn the books" censorship brigade in the past. Is this the modern version "police the PC".

I am shocked and disaprove - however there are other forums.

I was halfway through typing a reply to this post in 'Open' when it disappeared - I thought I was losing the plot.
<blockquote><font size=1>In reply to:</font><hr>

<hr></blockquote>

I think that most threads are pc/internet related eg links or jokes received in emails which members decide to share for the amusement or interest of other users. Without the non-pc posts eg birthdays, anecdotes of a person's daily life etc I think 'open' would become somewhat flat - at the mpment there seems to be a nice blend, which most members look forward to reading - at least I do

I'm going to sit on the fence here:

In favour of the new guidelines set out today:

You get to read posts that are IT/Internet related, without having to wade through posts about people leaving, people who are having a bad day/good day, birthday announcements, upset people, bickering/ bad mouthing threads.

I agree with Andrew C about not wanting to start a chat board. It's very difficult to police. Lycos chat has a system thats moderated and that blocks swear words and switches them to other words, but it could be expensive to set up and maintain.

Points against the change:

Forum members feel disillusioned as they feel like their area for friendship and socialising has been taken away.

The solution? Why not have a separate General Chat area altogether? Keeps the people who want to talk IT/discuss IT issues happy. Keeps people who want to socialise happy.

I have been away for 5 days and get back to this. Well I won't be posting on here any more after tonight....... not much point really as I would have nothing to post only the occasional hijackthis log or some problem with my pc. I am not leaving, I will still read the forum.
IMHO this is a big mistake however as has already been said ......... there are other forums. I know most people enjoy reading about other people's trials and tribulations.
I don't really need a chat room thingy as I have enough messenger contacts to keep me going but some people don't have that luck. The one thing that open HAD that other forums don't is how the young and the old got on so well together and supported each other........... I have been on other forums and have never found one with the same atmosphere that this one had.
Oh well if that's the way things are going to be then so be it.

Open forum has a good mix for all interests but why is it when something is working well some one has to TRY to alter it. Same at work all is going fine then they change it and the proverbial hits the fan after all the agro and upset things change back and they call this progress.
Can we have a vote on it ?
